Unhurried time climbing down through slippery Ice Plants.
Making footprints in cool, wet sand on an empty beach.
Feeling the sharp crunch of stepping on broken seashells.
Tasting salty fog weighing down my hair, clinging to my face.

Closing my eyes and hearing...really hearing.
Frothy water exploding against rocks,
soft, whispering foam rolling in and out on the shore.
Smelling brine and mussels in tide pools.
Seaweed tossed like a feather,
in the tube of a dark, gray wave.

Listening to gulls screech and pelicans chirp.
Looking back up the cliff side to
Seeing an explosion of colors made
by daisy flowers crawling on Ice Plant.

Ice Plant is a succulent, Delosperma cooperi. This perennial thrives in gravelly soils from summer into fall in warm climates. It's daisy like blooms are brilliant and multi-colored. It's name comes from the cylindrical, green leaves with white flakes that remind you of ice. When broken they produce a slick green jelly. This and it's shape gives it the knick name Pickle Weed.
